They All Came to Barneys
They All Came to Barneys: Personal History of the World’s Greatest Store is a 2025 memoir by Gene Pressman about his grandfather, Barney Pressman, and Barneys New York. Viking Press published the book on September 2, 2025. The 400-page English-language memoir shares the history and the rise and fall of the famous store, with the final chapter titled “The Barneys Diaspora” serving as acknowledgments. Gene Pressman, who worked at Barneys for much of his life, earlier wrote Chasing Cool.
Reception was mixed. The Washington Post praised the book as fun to read and noted the author’s unapologetic attitude. Publishers Weekly liked the vivid glimpses into New York City’s fashion world but felt the narrative loses its spark at times due to the author’s defensiveness. Adrienne Raphel of The New Yorker described reading the book as like flipping through a scrapbook with Pressman by your side.
There is also a planned TV adaptation. Joe Wright is set to direct, Beth Schacter to write, and Amazon MGM Studios to produce, with Stacey Sher as an executive producer.
In short, the memoir blends family history with Barneys’ glamorous but turbulent story, offering a personal view of a legendary store and its enduring legacy.
