Men of Skagen on a Summer Evening in Fair Weather

Men of Skagen on a Summer Evening in Fair Weather is a painting from 1848 by Martinus Rørbye, an important Danish artist of the Golden Age. Rørbye was among the first painters to visit Skagen, with trips in 1833 and again in 1847. He studied with the well-known Eckersberg and became a central figure in Danish Golden Age painting.

The painting was shown at Charlottenborg, and King Frederik VII bought it for the royal collection. It is now owned by the Danish National Gallery, but has been on display at Skagens Museum since 1983. The work measures 87 by 124 centimeters and shows Rørbye’s skill in balanced landscapes, color, and composition. It is a good example of how the Danish Golden Age painters depicted the countryside.
