Nesogale
Nesogale is a genus of tenrecs, small afrotherian mammals that are endemic to Madagascar. It currently contains two species: Nesogale dobsoni (Dobson's shrew tenrec) and Nesogale talazaci (Talazac's shrew tenrec). These two were once classified in the genus Microgale, but molecular studies in 2016 showed they form a sister group to the rest of Microgale. As a result, they were placed in Nesogale, a genus first created by Oldfield Thomas in 1918.
The Nesogale species are larger and more robust than other shrew tenrecs in Microgale, and they lack premolar diastemata. They are distributed across much of eastern and northern Madagascar.
The Nesogale lineage is estimated to have diverged from Microgale in the Early Miocene, about 19 million years ago.
Type species: Nesogale dobsoni (Dobson's shrew tenrec), originally described as Microgale dobsoni by Thomas in 1884.
