Maritza Rosabal Peña Rosabal, born on January 12, 1957 in Havana, Cuba, is a Cuban-born historian and academic who became a Cape Verdean national figure. She earned a bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Havana.

Rosabal spent many years in Cape Verde’s education sector. She held several leadership roles in the Ministry of Education, including General Director of Education and General Director of Primary and Secondary Education. She also taught at the Jean Piaget University of Cape Verde and the University of Cape Verde.

On May 5, 2016, she was appointed as Cape Verde’s Minister of Education and Minister of Family and Social Inclusion, serving until December 4, 2020. During her time in office, she promoted gender equality and led important initiatives, such as implementing the Law against Gender-Based Violence and helping create the Laço Branco Network.

Rosabal was succeeded in her ministerial roles by Amadeu Cruz (Education) and Elísio Freire (Family and Social Inclusion). Her work has been recognized by organizations including UN Women.
