Apis (city)
Apis was an ancient seaport on the north coast of Africa, named for the god Apis. It lay about 18 km west of Paraetonium. Its exact location is uncertain: some sources place it in Egypt, others in Marmarica. Ancient geographers disagree: Scylax put it at the western boundary of Egypt near Marmaridae; Ptolemy lists it in Libyae Nomos; Pliny describes it as a notable place with Egyptian religious influence. Distances from Paraetonium vary: 72 Roman miles in one account, 12 miles in another, and Strabo mentions about 100 stadia.
