Japanese destroyer Nowaki (1906)
Nowaki was a Kamikaze-class destroyer of the Imperial Japanese Navy, built in the early 20th century. It was constructed at Sasebo Naval Arsenal, launched on 25 July 1906, and completed on 1 November 1906. Nowaki served in World War I, including the Siberian Expedition, and was decommissioned on 1 April 1924, later being scrapped.
Design and description:
- Class: Kamikaze-class destroyer (improved Harusame class)
- Displacement: 381 long tons (normal); 450 long tons (deep load)
- Dimensions: length 227 ft (between perpendiculars), 234 ft (overall); beam 21 ft 7 in; draught 6 ft
- Machinery: 2 vertical triple-expansion steam engines, 4 Kampon boilers; 6,000 indicated horsepower; top speed 29 knots
- Range: 1,500 nautical miles at 15 knots
- Crew: 70
Armament:
- 2 × 3-inch (76 mm) 12 cwt guns on single mounts (one forward, one aft)
- 4 × 3-inch (76 mm) 8 cwt guns on single mounts (two per broadside)
- 2 × single 450 mm torpedo tubes
Name:
Nowaki means "a gale between grass" or "Autumn typhoon" in Japanese. It was one of 32 Kamikaze-class destroyers built for the IJN; sister ship Ayanami.
Construction and career:
- Launched 25 July 1906 at Sasebo; completed 1 November 1906
- Served in World War I; participated in the Siberian Expedition
- Decommissioned 1 April 1924; scrapped later that year
