Sinclair QL character set
Sinclair QL character set
The Sinclair QL character set was developed by Sinclair Research for the Sinclair QL personal computer. It is an 8-bit code page with 256 characters, arranged in a 16-by-16 grid (addresses 0x00 to 0xFF).
What it contains
- Control characters (such as NUL, LF, CR, and TAB) in the lower addresses.
- The printable ASCII characters from space to tilde, plus many extra symbols.
- Currency signs like £, ¢, and ¥.
- Letters with diacritics (for European languages), including ä, é, è, ñ, ç, ø, Å, Ö, ß, and their uppercase forms.
- Greek letters (α, β, γ, Δ, Ω, π, and more) in various positions.
- Mathematical and technical symbols (≤, ≥, ≡, ≠, ∑, ∇, ∂, √, ∞, ∮, and others).
- Punctuation, arrows (←, →, ↑, ↓), and card suits (♠, ♥, ♦, ♣).
- Copyright, registered, and other common symbols (such as © and ®).
In short, the Sinclair QL’s 256-character set combines the familiar ASCII set with many extra symbols, accents, and Greek letters to support European languages, mathematics, and typography on the QL computer.
