Produce Terminal Cold Storage Company Building

The Produce Terminal Cold Storage Company Building is a historic refrigerated warehouse at 1550 South Blue Island Avenue in Chicago’s Near West Side, Illinois. Built in 1928–29, it was the largest cold storage facility in the city when it opened, reflecting Chicago’s role as a major shipping hub and the importance of storing perishable goods for year-round sales. The eleven-story building was designed in the Art Deco style by architects H. Peter Henschien and Robert J. McLaren. The top two stories feature decorative terra cotta and tile ornament, including chevrons, Egyptian-inspired colonettes, and a dentillated cornice with cymatium molding. Inside, the facility included extensive refrigerated space plus processing and office areas to improve efficiency and lower costs for tenants. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 22, 2003. It sits on about 1.5 acres and is located at coordinates 41.86056°N, 87.65972°W.
