Equestrian events at the 1912 Summer Olympics
The Stockholm Games featured five medal events in equestrian: three individual disciplines—dressage, eventing, and show jumping—and two team events (team eventing and team show jumping). This was the sport’s second appearance in the Olympics, after 1900. Ten nations competed: Belgium, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and the United States. Sweden and Germany shipped full teams for all three disciplines, while several other countries had riders in two or three events. There were 88 entries, with 62 riders and 70 horses.
Disciplines
- Show jumping: 40 riders from 8 nations competed on a course with 15 obstacles and 29 efforts. The course allowed a maximum height of 1.40 meters and was used for both individual and team medals.
- Dressage: 21 riders from 8 nations took part. The competition differed from modern dressage, with five jumps up to 1.10 meters and a final obstacle (a barrel rolled toward the horse). Riders could earn bonus points for riding with one hand.
- Eventing: 27 riders from 7 nations, with team entries of 3–4 riders per nation (all officers on military mounts). The five-day format included a 55 km endurance ride, a 3500 m steeplechase, a 15-obstacle jumping test, and a final dressage test; each phase could earn up to 10 points.
