Miriam Batten
Miriam Batten, who later became Miriam Luke, is a British former rower born on 4 November 1964 in Dartford, Kent. She competed in three Olympic Games and won a silver medal in 2000.
Rowing career highlights
- While studying at the University of Southampton, she was part of the Southampton University Boat Club and helped the British coxless four win the national title at the 1990 British Rowing Championships.
- 1992 Olympics in Barcelona: competed in the coxless pair with Joanne Turvey, finishing fifth.
- 1996 Olympics in Atlanta: featured in the women’s eight, which finished seventh.
- World Championships: in 1997 at Lac d’Aiguebelette, she won a silver medal in double sculls with Gillian Lindsay; in 1998 in Cologne, she won gold in double sculls with Gillian Lindsay.
- 2000 Olympics in Sydney: won a silver medal in the quadruple sculls alongside her sister Guin Batten.
- In 2012, she appeared on the Gloriana with Guin Batten at the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.
- In the 2024 New Year Honours, she was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to women’s rowing.
Personal life and later roles
- Miriam is married to David Luke, a physical education teacher.
- She has held leadership roles in rowing clubs: Vice President of Thames Rowing Club, President of Henley Rowing Club, and a member of Upper Thames Rowing Club.
- She served as Chairman of the Henley Women’s Regatta in 2012 and was appointed as a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta in 2016.
