Bat fly

Bat flies are parasitic flies that live on bats. They belong to two families, Nycteribiidae and Streblidae, and are found worldwide. They are part of a larger group called Hippoboscoidea, which also includes other related fly families.

A related group, Mystacinobiidae, has only one species in New Zealand, Mystacinobia zelandica. This species is unusual because it feeds on bat guano, is wingless, has very small eyes, and rides on bats (phoresis).
