Kevin Godley
Kevin Michael Godley, born 7 October 1945 in Prestwich, England, is an English singer‑songwriter, drummer and music video director. He is best known for his work with the rock/pop duo 10cc and later with Lol Creme as Godley & Creme.
Early life
Godley grew up in a Jewish family and went to North Cestrian Grammar School in Altrincham. At art college in Manchester he met Lol Creme. He joined the R&B group The Sabres, which later became The Magic Lanterns.
10cc and Godley & Creme
Godley was a singer, drummer and keyboardist for 10cc. He teamed up with Creme to form Godley & Creme. They released four studio albums with 10cc before leaving the band in 1977 during the making of Deceptive Bends. In 1977 they issued Consequences, a three‑LP concept album about a meek man and his melodramatic life, featuring Peter Cook and using early gadget ideas to mimic orchestral sounds. The project drew a niche following but was not a commercial hit. Godley and Creme briefly reunited with former 10cc members on the 1992 album ...Meanwhile before parting ways again. In 2025 they performed as 10cc with the BBC Concert Orchestra for BBC Radio 2’s Piano Room, playing I’m Not in Love, a new piece I Don’t Want To Go To Heaven, and a cover of All I Have To Do Is Dream.
Later work and other projects
Godley later formed GG/06 with Gouldman, releasing a self‑titled EP that was offered for free on their website. He has occasionally joined Gouldman’s 10cc concerts and appeared on the live album Clever Clogs (2008). He created WholeWorldBand, an iPad‑based platform that aims to turn audio and video into a cloud recording studio, which was a finalist at SXSW’s Music Accelerator in 2013. In 2017 he invited musicians to contribute to his solo album Muscle Memory, which was completed and released in 2021 after a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMusic and release by The state51 Conspiracy. In 2018 he received an honorary Doctorate of Arts from Staffordshire University. In 2021 he joined Group Of Humans as Creative Director and now lives in Wicklow, Ireland with his wife Sue, with plans to direct a film about Orson Welles in Ireland.
