Marino Nicolich
Marino Nicolich (also known as Marino Nicoli) was an Italian footballer who played as a full back. He was born on 30 July 1910 in Monfalcone, Italy, and little is known about his life after 1939.
Nicolich began his career with his hometown club, Monfalcone. He helped the team win their group of the 1928–29 Prima Divisione, earning promotion to Serie B for the inaugural 1929–30 season. As a teenager, he was selected for the Venezia Giulia representative team to play Tuscany, earning praise for his defensive solidity and composure.
He played most of the 1929–30 Serie B season for Monfalcone and then joined Spezia for the 1930–31 season, making nine appearances while on military service. His performances attracted attention from Roma, who signed him in August 1931. Nicolich made his Serie A debut for Roma in October 1931 against Pro Patria, but he made a few errors and lost his place, totalizing only a handful of first-team appearances before being transfer-listed.
Nicolich returned to Monfalcone for the 1932–33 season, but the club withdrew from Serie B due to ownership problems. He then moved to Triestina ahead of the 1933–34 season, where he spent several seasons (1933–1937) and made 46 league appearances. He became a regular in Triestina, including a notable run in 1934–35, and earned praise in matches against teams like Livorno.
After Triestina, he had a spell with Venezia in 1937–38 and returned to Monfalcone in 1938. In total, Nicolich made about 100 appearances in Italy’s top two divisions. During the fascist regime, his surname was sometimes written as Nicoli due to Italianisation of names.
