Bolt Tail
Bolt Tail
Bolt Tail is a headland on the south coast of Devon, England, just southwest of Hope Cove in the South Hams district. It sits at the western end of a National Trust coastal walk to Salcombe, passing Bolberry Down and Bolt Head.
What you can see and do:
- The area offers views over Bantham Beach and Burgh Island.
- On clear days you can see far along the coast, and in very good visibility you might even spot Dodman Point in Cornwall, or occasionally Lizard Point under extraordinary conditions.
- Bolt Tail is part of National Trust land and has a history as the site of an Iron Age promontory fort, though little remains of the fort today.
History:
- The sea nearby has claimed ships in the past, including the SS Jebba in 1907 and HMS Ramillies in 1760.
Location:
- Bolt Tail lies at grid reference SX670397. It is a notable landmark at the end of a popular coastal walk.
