Minister for Early Childhood Education

The Minister for Early Childhood Education is an Australian Government position responsible for national policies on early childhood education and childcare. The minister leads work in the Department of Education and collaborates with state and territory governments to support young children’s learning and care.

The role was created in 2009. Since then, several ministers have held the job, including Kate Ellis and Anne Aly. The current minister is Jess Walsh, who was sworn in on 13 May 2025 after the Labor Party won the 2025 federal election.
