The Pacific Ocean (band)
The Pacific Ocean was an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 1996. They mixed indie rock and indie pop and were active until 2003.
The band was started by Connie Lovatt (bass and vocals) and Edward Baluyut (guitar and vocals, later drums). Baluyut had left his band Versus, and Lovatt had sung with Containe. They released their debut mini‑album Birds don't think they're flying on Enchanté Records in 1997, with Lovatt on bass and lead vocals and Baluyut on drums and guitar (Patrick Ramos, then with Versus, played drums on one track). A few more songs were recorded around that time and released later.
Drummer Steve Pilgrim joined in 1997, and The Pacific Ocean played many shows in New York and the East Coast, often touring with Versus and The Magnetic Fields.
In 1999 they released their full-length album Less Than the Needle, More Than the Shotgun, co-produced by Edward Baluyut’s brother James Baluyut. Their third and final album, So Beautiful and Cheap and Warm, appeared in 2002 on TeenBeat Records. It was produced by Bill Callahan (as Johnny Appleseed) and included extra guitar by Alan Licht.
The band stopped recording and performing after 2003. Connie Lovatt later played bass for Smog on the 2005 album A River Ain’t Too Much to Love and toured with Smog. She also co‑authored The Dumpling: A Seasonal Guide.
