The Big Five False Bay Local Municipality
The Big Five False Bay Local Municipality was a local government area in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, in the Umkhanyakude District. Its administrative seat was Hluhluwe. The municipality covered about 2,121 square kilometers and had a population of around 35,000 people in 2011.
Naming and location
- The area was named after the Big Five animals (lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros), which can be seen in nearby game reserves such as Hluhluwe, Mfolozi, and Phinda.
- False Bay is part of the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park area.
People and language
- In 2011, about 95.8% of residents were Black African, with very small percentages of other groups.
- The most common first language was Zulu (about 93%), followed by English and other languages.
Governance
- The municipality had seven councilors: four were elected by first-past-the-post voting in four wards, and three were chosen from party lists to ensure proportional representation.
- In the 2011 election, no party won an outright majority. The African National Congress (ANC) and the National Freedom Party (NFP) formed a coalition to govern, while the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) also held seats.

- The 2001 census listed several main places within the municipality, including Hlabisa, Hluhluwe Township, Hluhluwe, Makhasa, Mdletshe, Mnqobokazi, Nibela, and the remainder of the municipality.
What happened after 2016
- After municipal elections in 2016, The Big Five False Bay Local Municipality was merged into the larger Big Five Hlabisa Local Municipality.
