Telebarta
Telebarta: A simple overview
Telebarta is a private telephone network operator in Bangladesh. In Bengali, it is written as টেলিবার্তা. It had about 56,424 subscribers as of May 2008. The company is branded under the name Jubok phone.
History
Telebarta is branded as Jubok phone. In 2004, a group of six banks and financial institutions lent Tk 300 crore to Jubok for a project to build 250 mobile towers and related infrastructure across Bangladesh. The project was later found to be fictitious, and Jubok defaulted on the loan repayment. By 2021, the total debt (including interest) had risen to Tk 446 crore. After a long legal battle that began in 2008, a court in Dhaka ruled in favor of the lenders, which led to the auction of Jubok’s mortgaged properties to recover the debt.
Numbering scheme
Telebarta uses a specific numbering format for subscribers:
- +880 36 N1N2N3N4N5N6N7N8
- 880 is the international dialing code for Bangladesh (needed when dialing from outside the country)
- 036 is the general Telebarta access code. If dialing locally, you can omit +880 and use a leading 0 instead.
