Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais
Nicolas Viton de Saint-Allais (1773–1842) was a French genealogist and writer. He was born on April 6, 1773 in Langres, France, and worked as an assistant to General Guillaume Brune during the French Revolution. In 1808 he started a genealogical practice called the Bureau général de la Noblesse de France. By around 1820 he sold the business to Jean-Baptiste-Pierre Courcelles. He died in Paris in 1842 and is buried at Montparnasse Cemetery. He had one son who later served in the French Foreign Legion. His notable works include The Art of Verifying Dates (six volumes, 1818–1820) and De l'ancienne France (1833).
