Bundwerk
Bundwerk is a traditional timber-building method from the Alpine region, especially Austria, South Tyrol, and Bavaria. It came after log construction and timber framing and became a common way to build farm buildings. Beams are arranged in a lattice or diagonal pattern across the wall, giving the walls a decorative look. This pattern often enhances the front and gable sides of barns or Stadel on square farmyards (Vierseithöfe).
In northeastern Upper Bavaria, Bundwerk is particularly varied and colorful. In Werdenfelser Land and around Innsbruck, it is less common. Bundwerk reached its peak between 1830 and 1860, when artists and woodcarvers decorated the beams with paintings and carvings, often featuring mythical creatures or Christian symbols.
