Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves

The Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves are a group of ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves in Guazhou County, Gansu, in northwest China. They are cut into conglomerate rock along two cliff faces on opposite sides of a now-dry river gorge. The complex contains 23 caves—14 on the west side and 9 on the east.

Eight of the caves are decorated with murals and sculptures dating from the Western Xia and Yuan dynasties. Many of the statues were later reworked during the Qing dynasty.

Together with the Mogao Caves, Western Thousand Buddha Caves, Yulin Caves, and Five Temple Caves, the Eastern Thousand Buddha Caves are one of five grotto sites near Dunhuang managed by the Dunhuang Academy.
