A. L. Abdul Majeed
A. L. Abdul Majeed, whose full name was Abdul Latiff Abdul Majeed, was a Sri Lankan Muslim politician and a long-serving member of Parliament. He was born on 15 November 1933 and died on 13 November 1987.
Early life and education
Majeed studied at Sivananda Vidyalayam in Batticaloa, Trincomalee Hindu College, and later at Wadia College in Bombay. He also studied at Presidency College in Madras.
Family
His son, Mohamed Najeeb (M. N. Abdul Majeed), is a provincial councillor and a former Chief Minister of the Eastern Province.
Political career
Majeed ran for office in Mutur in the March 1960 election but did not win. He won the Mutur seat as a Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) candidate in the July 1960 election and became a member of Parliament. He was appointed Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works in 1964. He was re-elected in the 1965 and 1970 elections. From 1970 to 1977, he served as Deputy Minister of Information and Broadcasting.
In 1976, a Delimitation Commission created the Seruvila Electoral District from parts of Mutur, turning Mutur into a single-member district. Majeed lost his seat in the 1977 parliamentary election.
Assassination
A. L. Abdul Majeed was assassinated on 13 November 1987. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were widely blamed for the killing.
