Castra of Hoghiz
The Castra of Hoghiz is a Roman fort in the ancient province of Dacia, located where the village of Hoghiz now stands in Transylvania, Romania. It was built in the 2nd century AD on the left bank of the Olt River, near a Dacian settlement that existed from the 2nd century BC.
Size and location: The fort covered about 3.6 hectares, measuring roughly 220 by 165 meters. It sits at about 460 meters above sea level in Brașov County. It is also known as Castra of Ungra.
What it was: The fort was part of the Roman frontier network along the Limes Alutanus. It connected to nearby forts such as Cincșor and Rupes, helping protect the region of Dacia Apulensis and Dacia Superior under Roman administration.
Garrisons: Over time, the site housed several units, including Legio XIII Gemina, Cohors III Gallorum, Ala I Asturum, and Numerus Illyricorum.
History: Construction began in the 2nd century AD, and the fort was abandoned in the 3rd century AD. Today, ruins remain at the site.
Today: The ruins are near Hoghiz, Brașov County, Romania. The site is listed as a National Historical Monument in Romania and, as part of UNESCO’s Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2024.
