Amanda Shaw
Amanda Shaw is an American Cajun fiddler and singer from Mandeville, Louisiana. Born Amanda Christian Amaya-Shaw on August 2, 1990, in Boston, Massachusetts, she grew up with Cajun music in Louisiana. She started classical violin at age 4 and began playing Cajun music at 8. She trained at Southeastern Louisiana University’s Community Music School.
She earned a GED in 2008 after deciding not to finish high school in the usual way. She planned to attend Tulane University but chose to focus on touring and performing instead. Her band, The Cute Guys, travels worldwide and is a regular act at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
Shaw has appeared on national TV, including Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in 2020 and CNN’s New Year’s Eve with Don Lemon in 2018, 2019, and 2021. She has released several albums: Little Black Dog (2001), I’m Not a Bubble Gum Pop Princess (2004), Pretty Runs Out (2008), Good Southern Girl (2010), Please, Call Me Miss Shaw (2018), and Joie (2020). She signed with Rounder Records in 2006 and released Pretty Runs Out in 2008.
She acted in two Disney Channel movies, Stuck in the Suburbs (2004) and Now You See It… (2005), and served as a narrator in Hurricane on the Bayou (2006), a documentary about Hurricane Katrina whose music features Shaw’s work. From 2017 to 2021 she hosted the Amanda Shaw Cajun Christmas Special on WGNO.
Amanda Shaw’s work earned her induction into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2020. Her official site is amandashaw.com.
