False Pretenses
False Pretenses (1935) - Short Summary
What it is
A light American romantic comedy directed by Charles Lamont. The story follows two down-on-their-luck characters who team up for a clever scheme that turns into a life lesson about love and integrity.
Plot
Mary Beekman, a former waitress, and Ken Alden, a broke socialite, meet on a windy bridge. They decide to help each other by pretending Ken has a fake beauty product to raise money. The plan would let Mary pass as a society woman and marry a wealthy bachelor, then pay everyone back with interest. But Ken’s honesty and Mary’s budding feelings for Pat Brennan complicate things. A thief, a stolen tiara, and a police chase throw the plan into chaos. In the end, everyone ends up getting what they truly want, with relationships built on real feelings rather than money.
