Overview
- This was the first season of the new second tier of British speedway, called British League Division Two.
- Five new clubs joined: Nelson Admirals, Crayford Highwaymen, Canterbury Crusaders, Berwick Bandits and Reading Racers.
- Middlesbrough, Plymouth and Rayleigh returned to league action, and Weymouth came back after a 13-year absence.
- Belle Vue Aces’ reserve side, Belle Vue Colts, won the league title.

Knockout Cup
- The Canterbury Crusaders won the Knockout Cup, beating Reading in the final series.
- Final aggregate score: Canterbury 112, Reading 80 (first leg 60–36 to Canterbury; second leg 52–44 to Reading).
Riders’ Championship
- Graham Plant won the Riders’ Championship held at Hackney Wick Stadium on 27 September. There was a notable crash during the event, with some riders taken to hospital, but Barry Crowson later rode for his parent club.
