107th Division (Imperial Japanese Army)

The 107th Division, nicknamed the Lull Division, was an infantry division of the Imperial Japanese Army. It was formed on May 16, 1944, in Arxan as a triangular division, with the 7th independent mixed regiment as its nucleus. It belonged to the 44th Army.

Action: In August 1945, during the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, the division was ordered to march about 600 km from Arxan to Changchun. On August 14, advance elements were ambushed by a Soviet armored regiment. On August 15, communications were cut and the division withdrew to Inder, in the Jalaid Banner of Mongolia, breaking contact with the Soviet forces. Contact was re-established on August 25, and the division surrendered on August 27, 1945.

Casualties and aftermath: About 1,500 soldiers died, and around 2,000 more were taken prisoner and did not return to Japan until years later (some returned in 1949; most were not released until 1956).

Commander: Notable commander Koichi Abe.
