History at a glance
- Turzyn dates back to the High Middle Ages as a small farming village near Szczecin, adjacent to the Passau Gate and known as part of the Turzyn Municipal Field.
- It changed hands between churches and was once the site of fortifications built by the Swedish army in the 17th century. After Prussian fortifications were expanded in the 18th century, the original village was moved to a new location, creating Nowy Turzyn (New Turzyn) and Old Turzyn.
- The fortifications were removed after 1873. A cemetery opened in 1815 and later became Stanisław Noakowski Park.
- The area developed into a suburb and was incorporated into Szczecin in 1910. The Turzyn railway station opened in 1898 (originally Torney/Stettin-Torney); a rail accident occurred there in 1946.
- Early 20th century saw the establishment of technical education facilities, including the Royal Higher School of Mechanical Engineering (opened 1901) and, after World War II, the Szczecin University of Technology on the former site (37 Sikorskiego Street).
- Turzyn has also seen major shopping and urban development: the Turzyn Marketplace in the 1960s, Turzyn Mall in 2001, and Nowy Turzyn in 2011. In 2022 a bronze statue honoring engineer Mikhail Dolivo-Dobrovolsky was unveiled in a square named after him, near Bohaterów Warszawy.
