Speed limits in Hungary

- General rule: Speed limits depend on the road type and the vehicle.

- Urban areas (lakott terület):
- Cars, motorcycles and vans: 50 km/h
- Cars and vans with trailers: 50 km/h
- Heavy goods vehicles (over 3.5 t): 50 km/h
- Buses: 50 km/h
- Note: Some urban multi-lane roads may have higher limits (usually 60, 70 or 80 km/h).

- Rural roads (országút):
- Cars, motorcycles and vans: 90 km/h
- Cars and vans with trailers: 70 km/h
- Heavy goods vehicles: 70 km/h
- Buses: 70 km/h

- Rural highways (autóút, non-motorway divided roads):
- Cars, motorcycles and vans: 110 km/h
- Cars and vans with trailers: 70 km/h
- Heavy goods vehicles: 70 km/h
- Buses: 80 km/h

- Motorways (autópálya):
- Cars, motorcycles and vans: 130 km/h
- Cars and vans with trailers: 80 km/h
- Heavy goods vehicles: 80 km/h
- Buses: 100 km/h

- Other notes:
- Some rural highways may have higher posted limits (100 or 110 km/h).
- Residential neighborhoods often have 30 km/h zones.

- History:
- 1 March 1993: Urban limit lowered from 60 to 50 km/h.
- 1 May 2001: Rural limits increased—rural roads 80→90, expressways 100→110, motorways 120→130 km/h.
