Madonna and Child with Saints (Master of San Lucchese)
Madonna and Child with Saints is a 14th‑century Italian painting, created around 1345. It was made with tempera and gold on a wooden panel and is now housed in the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, California. The work features halos around the Madonna and Child and the six saints who stand beside them. The central, largest figure is Mary holding Jesus, while three saints stand to her left and three to her right. The figures are arranged in a tightly crowded composition, but Mary and Child have space at the center.
The artist is unknown; historians give the painter a notname, Master of San Lucchese, to identify this anonymous 14th‑century Italian master who likely worked around Florence. The painting was once in Florence, in a church of San Lucchese, in Poggibonsi, where it stood on an altar.
In appearance, the upper part of the work has a solid gold ground, while the lower part shows a painted floor and a decorated wall. The gold area at the bottom seems to cast a shadow, giving the impression of a tapestry.
