Lucy Manners, Duchess of Rutland
Lucy Manners, Duchess of Rutland (born Lucy Sherard, c. 1685 – 27 October 1751) was a British heiress who married John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland.
Early life: She was the daughter of Bennet Sherard, 2nd Baron Sherard, and Elizabeth Christopher. Her grandfather was William Sherard, 1st Baron Sherard, a member of the English nobility and a connection to other prominent families of the time.
Personal life: On 1 January 1713, Lucy married John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland. They had eight children: Lord Sherard Manners (c. 1713–1742), Lord James Manners (1720–1790), Lord George Manners (d. 1721), Lady Caroline Manners (d. 1769; she married Sir Henry Harpur, 5th Baronet, and later Sir Robert Burdett, 4th Baronet), Lady Lucy Manners (c. 1717–1788; she married William Graham, 2nd Duke of Montrose), Lord Robert Manners (c. 1721–1782; he married Mary Digges), Lord Henry Manners (d. 1745), and Lord Charles Manners (d. 1761).
Later life and death: John Manners died on 22 February 1721, leaving Lucy a widow. She lived for several more decades at Beaufort House in Chelsea. Lucy Manners died on 27 October 1751 and was buried at Belvoir Castle Mausoleum.
