The 1991 Badminton Asian Cup was the first edition of the tournament. It took place at Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia, from December 18 to December 22, 1991. The prize money was US$100,000, and Cathay Pacific was the main sponsor.

- Men’s singles: Rashid Sidek (Malaysia) defeated Joko Suprianto (Indonesia). Final score: 15-8, 6-15, 18-14.
- Women’s singles: Tang Jiuhong (China) defeated Bang Soo-hyun (South Korea). Final score: 11-7, 6-11, 11-4.
- Men’s doubles: Cheah Soon Kit / Soo Beng Kiang (Malaysia) won the title.
- Women’s doubles: Chung So-young / Hwang Hye-young (South Korea) defeated Erma Sulistianingsih / Rosiana Tendean (Indonesia). Final score: 15-3, 5-15, 11-15.
- Mixed doubles: Shon Jin-hwan / Gil Young-ah (South Korea) defeated Aryono Miranat / Eliza Nathanael (Indonesia). Final score: 15-5, 8-15, 15-7.
