1957 U.S. Women's Open
1957 U.S. Women's Open – short version
The 1957 U.S. Women's Open was the 12th edition of the tournament. It was held June 27–29 at the East Course of Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York. The USGA organized it, and it was part of the LPGA Tour. The event used a 72-hole stroke-play format on a par-73 course, covering 6,246 yards. The field had 98 players (33 pros and 65 amateurs). The cut was 168 (+22). The prize fund totaled $7,200, with the winner receiving $1,800.
Betsy Rawls won with a total of 299 (+7). Jackie Pung had led at 298, but she was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Pung’s score was being kept by her playing partner, Betty Jameson, who had marked a par score of five for Pung on the fourth hole instead of a bogey six; Pung later made the same mistake on Jameson’s card, and both players were disqualified. This win marked Rawls’s fourth major title and her third U.S. Women’s Open.
The championship returned to Winged Foot East Course again in 1972; Winged Foot’s West Course has hosted many major championships.
