Johnston Scout Rocks
Johnston Scout Rocks are two sandstone rocks near Kemmerer, Wyoming, about a mile south of Emigrant Springs. They date back to around 1850 and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic site in the Recreation and Culture category, recognized as a work of art (rock art). The rocks sit close to Emigrant Springs, a camp area used by wagon trains heading to Oregon or California, and people carved names into the rocks, including a carving reading "T.C. Johnston, L.A. Cary 1860 Scout." In 1986, the Bureau of Land Management planned to fence the site and stabilize the carvings. Johnston Scout Rocks were added to the National Register on November 7, 1976 (NRHP reference number 76001957).
