Johann Karl, Count Chotek of Chotkow and Wognin
Johann Karl, Count Chotek of Chotkow and Wognin (1704–1787) was a Bohemian–Austrian statesman who served as a chancellor in the Habsburg lands.
Life
- He was born on 29 October 1704 in Prague, Kingdom of Bohemia, the elder son of Count Wenzel Chotek of Chotkow and Wognin and Maria Theresa Scheidler of Scheidlen. His family lived in Radnice, Bohemia.
- His father held the position of Austrian Stadtholder of the Kingdom of Bohemia from 1735 to 1738.
- Johann Karl became Imperial Governor and field-marshal of the Upper Palatinate, then served as Bohemian–Austrian Imperial Director and chancellor.
- In 1753 Empress Maria Theresa gave him Palais Strozzi in Vienna, where he had a new wing built. Later expansion plans and the Seven Years’ War led him to sell much of the garden.
- He was a Knight of the Order of St. Wenzel.
- He died on 8 November 1787 in Vienna, aged 83.
Marriage and family
- He married in 1740 in Vienna to Countess Anna Maria Kottulinsky of Kottulin and Krzizkowitz (1711–1798).
- They had one son, Johann Rudolf, Count Chotek of Chotkow and Wognin (1748–1824), who married Maria Sidonia of Clary and Aldringen.
Ancestry
- Johann Karl came from the Bohemian Chotek noble family. His father was Count Wenzel Chotek of Chotkow and Wognin, and his mother was Maria Theresa Scheidler.
