Ham, Wiltshire
Ham is a small village and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, near the border with Berkshire. It lies about 3 miles south of Hungerford. The parish borders Berkshire, and Ham Hill nearby is a protected biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The parish had a population of 161 in 2011. It falls under Wiltshire Council for local government. The OS grid reference is SU330629. The post town is Marlborough and the postcode district is SN8. The telephone code is 01488.
The parish church, All Saints’, dates from the 13th century and is a Grade I listed building. The nearby Manor House (17th century) and Dove’s House (early 18th century) are both Grade II* listed. Ham Spray House, built around 1830, is another notable property. A National School opened in 1874 opposite the Crown and Anchor pub and closed in 1980.
Amenities include a village hall and the Crown and Anchor pub. The parish is part of the Savernake team ministry for the church.
Notable people connected to Ham include members of the Bloomsbury Group who lived at Ham Spray House, such as Lytton Strachey, Dora Carrington, Frances Partridge, Stephen Tomlin, and Henrietta Bingham. The 1995 film Carrington is partly set there.
