1948 North Carolina lieutenant governor election

The election was held on November 2, 1948. Democratic candidate Hoyt Patrick Taylor won, defeating Republican candidate R. Kyle Hayes with 72.18% of the vote.

Primary elections were held on May 29, 1948. In the Democratic primary, Hoyt Patrick Taylor defeated Daniel L. Tompkins by 240,663 votes (70.62%) to 100,101 votes (29.38%) out of a total of 340,764 votes.

In the general election, besides Taylor (Democratic) and Hayes (Republican), A. Kenneth Harris ran as a Progressive and received 3,368 votes (0.45%).

Turnout totaled 754,439 votes. The final results were: Hoyt Patrick Taylor 544,560 votes (72.18%), R. Kyle Hayes 206,511 votes (27.37%), A. Kenneth Harris 3,368 votes (0.45%).

The lieutenant governor before the election was Lynton Y. Ballentine (Democrat). After the election, Hoyt Patrick Taylor (Democrat) became lieutenant governor.
