The Banta-Coe House is a very old Dutch colonial-style home in Teaneck, Bergen County, New Jersey. It sits on Lone Pine Lane, overlooking the Hackensack River, on the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) campus.

Built around 1700, it is one of New Jersey’s oldest surviving colonial-era houses.

Over the years, the house was owned by four families. The Banta family built it in the 18th century, then sold it to the Coe family in the early 1800s. The Coes owned it for much of the 19th century and added a second story. The Hampton family bought the house in 1940 and lived there until FDU bought it in 1993 as the campus expanded.

Architecturally, the house is Colonial, with Dutch Colonial influences. It still retains some original features, such as hand-hewn wooden floors, though parts were updated in the 1960s.

The Banta-Coe House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as Building 83001460 since January 10, 1983, and on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places (NJRHP) as number 172 since November 3, 1980, as part of a group recognizing early Bergen County stone houses.

After FDU acquired the house, plans were made to use it as an environmental resource center to document the Hackensack River’s pollution history and cleanup efforts. In 2000, there were ideas to use the upper level for the university’s New Jersey historical archives and the lower level for exhibits; about $30,000 was raised, with hopes for a matching Bergen County grant.

Location and size: 884 Lone Pine Lane, Teaneck, NJ, on about 0.1 acres.
