Gibraltar City Hall

Gibraltar City Hall is the former city hall of Gibraltar. It sits at John Mackintosh Square in the city center and is the office of the Mayor. Since 2023, it has also housed the Registry of Marriages.

History
The building began as Connaught House, a private mansion built in 1819 by Aaron Cardozo, a prosperous Jewish-Portuguese merchant. It was the grandest private home in Gibraltar and stood on the site of the old hospital and chapel of La Santa Misericordia. After Cardozo’s death in 1834, the mansion was leased to John Ansaldo as the Club House Hotel. In 1874 Pablo Antonio Larios bought and refurbished the building. In 1922 it became the seat of the Gibraltar City Council, and from 1926 the City Council also ran Gibraltar’s telephone service from the top floor. The building was later extended and today houses the Mayor’s Parlour.

Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery
In 2015, the Mario Finlayson National Art Gallery was opened at the City Hall. It displays works by famous Gibraltar artists such as Gustavo Bacarisas, Jacobo Azagury, Leni Mifsud, Rudesindo Mannia, and some works by Mario Finlayson.

Location
John Mackintosh Square, central Gibraltar.
