Anton Strauss
Anton Strauss (born 1858 in Kamianka, Russian Empire; date of death unknown) was a Russian mining engineer, inventor, and entrepreneur of German descent. He studied at Kiev Realschule and graduated from the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute in 1892. He worked closely with architect Vladislav Gorodetsky and became a successful businessman in Kiev. He was also the commodore of the Kiev Yacht Club from 1911 to around 1917 and held the title of actual state councilor.
What he did
- Inventor and engineer: He created a method to make a waterproof vertical layer and to compress nearby ground. This helped in building dams, dikes, bridges, tunnels, ports, and houses.
- Patent: He patented this technique in the United States on May 18, 1909 (US Patent 922,207).
- Business: He owned a Kiev company that built boreholes, pumps, and filters, and he was a board member of the South-Russian gunpowder plant.
Projects and collaborations
- He supported many of Vladislav Gorodetsky’s projects, including the famous House with Chimaeras in Kiev.
- He contributed to foundations and buildings such as the Museum of Ancient History and Arts, Karaite Kenesa, and St. Nicholas Cathedral in Kiev.

Family background
- Strauss came from a German-descended family. His father was Emil Christian Dietrich Strauss and his mother was Fanny Elizabeth Wiesel. His brother Oscar Strauss was a physicist and entrepreneur; cousins Oscar Wiesel and Emil Wiesel were also notable figures.
