Walnut Creek (Central Texas)
Walnut Creek is a 23-mile-long stream in Central Texas. It flows from the Edwards Plateau west of Austin to the Blackland Prairie east of the city, eventually joining the Colorado River downstream of Longhorn Dam. The upper part runs over limestone, while the southern section passes through deeper clay soils and hardwood forests. Its watershed covers about 36,000 acres and is the largest in Central Austin. The creek is accessible at several parks, especially Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park and Balcones District Park. The Tonkawa people lived along the creek. In 1833, Travis County’s first recorded clash between Indigenous people and settlers occurred along Walnut Creek, resulting in two deaths. The Tonkawa later allied with settlers against larger tribes such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache, and served as scouts for the Texas Rangers and U.S. Army.
