Trinity Centre for Asian Studies
The Trinity Centre for Asian Studies (TCAS) at Trinity College Dublin is a multidisciplinary hub for East Asian studies. It covers Chinese, Korean, and Japanese studies, as well as wider Asian area studies and pan-Asian or Asian/European comparisons. Its research focuses on contemporary Asian society and culture, language learning (Mandarin, Korean, Japanese), migrant and diaspora studies, and comparative studies.

What TCAS offers
- A two-year MPhil in Chinese studies with a contemporary, comparative perspective
- An extramural Mandarin language programme
- Optional Mandarin language classes for all Trinity students (undergraduates and postgraduates)
Partnerships and history
- Trinity has historic ties with China dating back to 1886; Trinity College Fuzhou (established 1907) is now Fuzhou Foreign Language School, Fujian Normal University, with ongoing teacher exchanges
- In the 1970s–80s, Trinity welcomed Chinese students
- MoUs and partnerships support study abroad with Beihang University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and the University of Nottingham Ningbo
- A strategic partnership with Fudan University began in 2014
- Government of Ireland International Scholarships are available for Chinese postgraduate students across disciplines
Korean and Japanese studies
- Korean Studies began in 2010, with for-credit Korean language and culture modules; supported by the Korea Foundation since 2011
- Japanese language programs have run for decades, with three proficiency levels and support from the Japan Foundation for credit-bearing modules integrated into undergraduate study
- MoUs enable study abroad for Irish and Japanese students with Tokyo University and Kyoto University
- The Arts of Japan module is a popular offering in the School of Histories and Humanities
