Toronto Cup Stakes
Toronto Cup Stakes is a Canadian Thoroughbred horse race held each year at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. It takes place in early July and is run on turf for three-year-olds over 1 1/8 miles (9 furlongs). The purse is $150,000.
The race began in 1890 as the Toronto Cup Handicap at the Old Woodbine track. It was run on dirt and open to older horses at first, and the distance changed over time: 1 1/4 miles through 1898, then 1 1/8 miles from 1899 to 1934. There was no race in 1918 and 1919, and the event was suspended in 1935 before being revived in 1953 for three-year-olds on dirt at 1 1/16 miles.
Since 1958 the race has been run on turf, with the only exception in 1968 when it was run on dirt. In 1987 the distance was set to the current 1 1/8 miles, except in 1994 when it was held at Fort Erie at 1 1/16 miles. The Toronto Cup has been run in two divisions in 1983, 1986, and 1999.
Early winners include Saragossa in 1894 and 1895.
