SPVAT (Seguro Obrigatório para Proteção de Vítimas de Acidentes de Trânsito) is a mandatory Brazilian insurance that provides compensation to people injured in road traffic accidents involving land motor vehicles. It began in 1974 under Law 6.194/74 and applies to victims such as pedestrians and cyclists who are harmed in these accidents. It does not cover damage to vehicles or injuries from non-land transportation modes like trains, boats, or airplanes.

The insurance pays for death (up to about R$13,500), permanent disability (up to about R$13,500), and medical expenses and related costs (up to about R$2,700). The exact limits are set by CNSP and ratified by Law 11.482/07.

SPVAT is compulsory for all motor vehicle owners and is paid once a year at the start of the year; the policy runs from January 1 to December 31.

Fees vary by vehicle type. For example, car fees have ranged in recent years from about R$40 to over R$100, while motorcycles have had higher fees (around R$180 in 2018) due to higher accident rates. Different fees also apply for rental cars, taxis, mopeds, trucks and buses.
