Robert IV of Artois, Count of Eu
Robert IV of Artois, Count of Eu
Robert IV of Artois (1356 – 20 July 1387) was a French noble who held two main titles: Duke of Durazzo (1376–1383) and Count of Eu (April–July 1387).
He was the son of John of Artois, Count of Eu, and Isabeau of Melun. Around 1376 he married Joanna of Durazzo, daughter of Charles, Duke of Durazzo. By marrying Joanna, Robert became Duke of Durazzo (jure uxoris) and ruled the duchy with her until 1383, when Karl Thopia captured Durazzo.
Robert inherited the County of Eu on 6 April 1387 after his father’s death, along with Saint-Valery and Ault. He was in Naples at the time and did not personally govern his lands.
On 20 July 1387, Robert and Joanna were poisoned in Castel dell’Ovo, Naples, on the orders of Joanna’s sister Margaret, the queen regent of Naples. They were buried at San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples. The marriage produced no children, and Robert was succeeded as Count of Eu by his younger brother Philip of Artois.
