Pleasures U Like
Pleasures U Like is the third studio album by American singer Jon B. It was released on March 20, 2001 in the United States and was his first album on Edmonds Record Group after Yab Yum Records folded. The project reunites Jon B with past producers Babyface, Tim Kelley, and Bob Robinson, with each producing one track. The album also features Joshua P. Thompson and Quincy Patrick.
The record received mixed reviews. It opened at number six on the US Billboard 200 and number three on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, selling about 99,000 copies in its first week and becoming Jon B.’s first top-ten album. He later said the album wasn’t marketed well. Only one single, "Don’t Talk," was released (on March 13, 2001), largely because Jon wanted to leave Epic Records; Pleasures U Like would become his final major-label release.
Critics offered a range of takes. Billboard’s Michael Paoletta said the album walks through different relationship stages and blends soulful retro grooves with hip-hop, echoing the feel of Marvin Gaye’s "Let’s Get It On." The Orlando Sentinel called the album original, fun, and a smooth hip-hop flavored R&B record, great for fans who want danceable tunes and sultry ballads. Entertainment Weekly praised Jon B.’s love songs, calling the album a soulful smorgasbord of intimate and sexy grooves. AllMusic gave it 3 out of 5 stars, calling it Jon B.’s most consistent album to date with a cool nighttime club vibe and a mix of upbeat tracks and ballads. NME criticized it for bland harmonies and a dry ballad stretch.
Pleasures U Like marked Jon B.’s first top-ten album and debuted strongly, though its commercial life was limited by its release on a major label that he soon left.
