Micrurus averyi, commonly known as Avery's coral snake or the black-headed coral snake, is a small venomous snake in the Elapidae family. It lives in northern South America and is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.

Taxonomy: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Reptilia, Order Squamata, Suborder Serpentes, Family Elapidae, Genus Micrurus, Species M. averyi. Scientific name: Micrurus averyi Schmidt, 1939.

Where it lives: It is found in southern Guyana (headwaters of the Courantyne River), southern Suriname, and parts of Brazil (Pará, Amazonas, Mato Grosso). It prefers forest habitats at elevations of about 100–600 meters (330–1,970 feet).

What it looks like: The head is almost entirely black with no nuchal ring. The body has only a few black rings that are not arranged in triads. It can reach up to about 70 cm (28 inches) in length.

Reproduction: This species lays eggs (oviparous).
