Lourdes Urrea
Lourdes Urrea (born July 17, 1954) is a Mexican author, artist and speaker. She began writing early—poems at age 12 and a mystery story at 16. She created the Cuentos de Escalofrío and Castillo del Terror series for young readers. Her short novels are used in the United States as reading material for bilingual middle school students.
Urrea also wrote language textbooks, English for the Latin Student and Spanish for the Foreign Student, and two poetry books, Versos Prohibidos and Historias Familiares. Her multimedia lecture The Goodness of Reading has been shown in libraries and schools around the world.
Her writing reflects her travels and her wish to share the world’s cultures with children; each story is set in a different country. In November 2008, she received the Doctor Honoris Causa award from the Latin American Council of Excellence in Education for her contributions to education in Latin American countries.
Affiliations include Castillo Macmillan Publishing Group, Instituto de la Lengua in Monterrey, Public Library Rudy Lozano in Chicago, Instituto Cervantes, and Cairo Public Library in Egypt.
