James W. Archer

James W. Archer (September 6, 1828 – January 28, 1908) was a Union Army officer who served in the Civil War. He was a first lieutenant in the 59th Indiana Volunteer Infantry. Archer earned the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Second Battle of Corinth, receiving the award on August 2, 1897. His citation says he voluntarily took command of another regiment, with the approval of senior officers, rallied the troops, and led the assault. He was born in Edgar County, Illinois, and is buried in Spencer, Indiana.
