Gustave Campiche
Gustave Campiche (August 1809 – 1871) was a Swiss physician who also worked in geology and paleontology. He was born in La Sagne and died in Sainte-Croix in the canton of Vaud. He started as a veterinarian, then studied medicine and earned a doctorate in Lyon. He practiced medicine in Rolle, then moved to Sainte-Croix in 1847 and stayed there until his death.
In 1861 he joined the cantonal parliament (the Grand Conseil) of Vaud, and in 1870 he was given the title of préfet (prefect). In his free time, he studied geology and paleontology around Sainte-Croix, collecting many fossils such as brachiopods, bryozoans, echinoids, and sponges.
With François-Jules Pictet de la Rive, he described several extinct gastropod genera: Pseudomelania (1862), Cryptoplocus (1862), and Pseudocassis (1863), along with numerous fossil species. Some of his collected material was sent to the Musée Géologique in Lausanne.
He also contributed to Pictet’s Description des fossiles du terrain crétacé des environs de Sainte-Croix (1858–72, in five parts) and to Georges de Tribolet’s Description géologique des environs de Sainte-Croix (1858).
